At Leeder Analytical, we often talk about the power of science, but sometimes that power shows up in very real and unexpected ways. One of our recent cases involved a local beekeeper who noticed something deeply worrying: bees were dying, and no one knew why.
Looking for answers, they reached out to our team, bringing in samples from their hives. What followed was a clear example of how analytical testing can make a meaningful difference – not just for a single beekeeper, but for our environment and food systems as a whole.
What We Discovered
Our testing revealed the presence of Fipronil, a highly potent insecticide from the phenylpyrazole family. We also detected two of its toxic breakdown products – Fipronil desulfinyl and Fipronil sulfone – as well as Mepiquat Chloride, a plant growth regulator.
Even in small amounts, these substances can seriously affect bee health. What we found was troubling:
- Adult bees were showing signs of agitation, tremors, seizures, and even paralysis
- Hive activity and colony growth had noticeably slowed
- Egg hatching and larval development were significantly reduced
- Many bees had become so lethargic that they began abandoning the colony altogether
Armed with this data, the beekeeper was able to take swift action – identifying the contamination source and putting protective measures in place to prevent further loss.
Why It Matters
Australia’s beekeeping industry does far more than produce honey. Bees play a critical role in pollinating crops that contribute billions of dollars to our economy. In fact, the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry estimates that bees support around 65% of the nation’s agricultural production through pollination.
But this essential part of our ecosystem is constantly under threat—from pests and disease to habitat loss and chemical exposure. Protecting our pollinators isn’t just a feel-good story—it’s vital to the future of sustainable farming and food security.
