Safe Explosives Start with Leeder Analytical

Scientist analysing oxidising agent in a lab setting.

When it comes to defence, precision isn’t a luxury – it’s a requirement. Whether it’s fuelling rockets or stabilising explosives, reactive chemical compounds play a critical role in Australia’s modern defence capabilities.

Among the most vital (and volatile) of these are oxidising agents, substances that drive the energetic reactions behind many military technologies.

At Leeder Analytical, our NATA-accredited (ISO 17025) laboratory brings over 25 years of specialised experience to this exact area of chemical analysis.

We support defence manufacturers, R&D teams, and compliance officers with the expert evaluation and safety verification of oxidisers used across explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnic devices.

Why Oxidising Agents Matter in Defence

Oxidising agents are the chemical powerhouses behind many of the Defence Force’s most critical capabilities. These reactive substances enable and sustain combustion, making them essential to the performance of explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics.

In defence settings, compounds such as nitrates, hydrogen peroxide, halogens, and oxygen-rich chemicals are routinely used to deliver the power, propulsion, and precision required by modern military systems.

Each of these compounds carries unique risks, particularly under extreme environmental conditions. Without stringent analysis and control, even small variations in chemical composition can result in instability, misfire, or catastrophic failure.

That’s why the role of precise laboratory testing is so vital, not only to meet compliance with military specifications, but also to ensure personnel safety and mission reliability.

Trusted by Defence for Critical Applications

Our laboratory is equipped with advanced instrumentation and follows stringent safety protocols when analysing high-reactivity substances. We understand the nuances of working with:

  • High-energy formulations requiring detailed decomposition profiling
  • Time-sensitive compounds used in missile and rocket systems
  • Sensitive oxidiser blends in R&D environments

From first-round production batches to long-term stockpile surveillance, our defence chemical testing expertise helps ensure that oxidising agents perform reliably and safely under the toughest conditions.

Aligning with National Defence Priorities

Our work directly supports the broader vision outlined in Australia’s 2024 National Defence Strategy and the Integrated Investment Program (IIP), which together aim to deliver a more self-reliant, responsive, and technologically advanced Defence Force.

The Australian Government has committed $764.6 billion in total Defence funding over the next decade, including $330 billion specifically earmarked for the recently rebuilt Integrated Investment Program (IIP) to improve “ADF preparedness”.

With the total figure coming in at $5.7 billion over the forward estimates and $50.3 billion over ten years, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles called Labor’s budget “the biggest commitment to increasing Defence funding over the forward estimate in decades”.

“This is about ensuring our Australian Defence Force is fit for purpose and equipped with suitable capabilities to meet present and future challenges,” he added.

These funds are being channelled toward urgent capability areas, including long-range strike, autonomous systems, and stockpile expansion, all of which rely heavily on safe and stable energetic materials (such as oxidising agents).

As outlined by the Albanese Government, this is more than spending, it’s an investment in a “future made in Australia,” designed to keep Australians safe while delivering sovereign capability, local jobs, and national resilience.

The IIP also includes major infrastructure programs, such as new missile manufacturing facilities and artillery ammunition plants, which require robust chemical testing and compliance frameworks throughout their lifecycle.

For Leeder Analytical, this means our chemical analysis testing has never been more crucial. We play a vital role in underpinning the safety, performance, and regulatory assurance of the materials that support Australia’s most advanced defence systems.

Broader Chemical Capabilities for Defence

While oxidisers are a key focus, they’re part of a broader suite of defence analytical capabilities offered by Leeder Analytical, including:

  • Ammunition composition and performance testing
  • Propellant and explosive verification
  • PFAS detection for contaminated sites and firefighting residues
  • Chemical warfare agent identification
  • Leachables, contaminants, and trace-level screening

We work closely with both public and private defence stakeholders to deliver rapid turnaround times, mission-specific testing programs, and scalable support to meet urgent milestones, whether in support of new missile facilities or ongoing Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) stockpile assessments.
