GC-MS Based Methods for Volatile and Semi-Volatile Compound Detection
At Leeder Analytical, we offer specialised laboratory capabilities for the detection and characterisation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) across a wide range of environmental and product matrices.
Our workflows are built on validated, NATA-accredited GC-MS methods and instrumentation optimised for ppt–ppb sensitivity.
Analytical Methods and Instrumentation
We apply multiple analytical configurations depending on compound class, matrix, and sampling method:
| Platform | Use Case | Features |
|---|---|---|
| TD-GC-MS (Markes) | Workplace/ambient air, odour studies | Solvent-free, ppt detection, direct thermal desorption |
| Headspace GC-MS | Product testing, aqueous samples | VOC profiling in sealed matrices, low contamination risk |
| Solvent Extraction GC-MS | Soil, sediment, packaging, consumer goods | SVOC recovery from complex solids/liquids |
| Triple Quadrupole GC-MS | Regulatory quantification | High selectivity MRM mode, ultra-trace sensitivity |
Each method supports both targeted and non-targeted workflows, depending on project requirements.
What Are VOCs and SVOCs?
- VOCs: Low molecular weight organic compounds that readily volatilise (e.g. benzene, acetone, chloroform).
- SVOCs: Heavier organic compounds with lower volatility, often found in solids, residues, or condensed phases (e.g. phthalates, PAHs, phenols).
These compounds are monitored due to their toxicity, persistence, and relevance to occupational, environmental, and consumer safety standards.
Compound Classes and Detection Limits
We routinely detect:
- Aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX)
- Chlorinated solvents and halogenated VOCs
- Aldehydes and ketones
- Phthalates, PAHs, phenols
- Flame retardants, plasticisers
- Process-related volatiles in products
Detection limits:
- Typically <1 ppb in air
- Low μg/kg or μg/L in soil, sediment, and aqueous matrices
Spectral matching is conducted via NIST/Wiley libraries, with expert confirmation of unknowns or overlapping peaks.
Applications of VOC/SVOC Analysis
Our capabilities support diverse scientific and industrial applications, including:
| Environmental and Ambient Air Assessment | Workplace and Occupational Exposure | Contaminated Site and Remediation Support | Product and Material Evaluation |
|---|---|---|---|
| • VOCs in ambient, urban, and industrial air • SVOCs associated with particulate matter or adsorbed on dust • Background studies and temporal monitoring |
• Personal exposure sampling (passive/active sorbent tubes) • Area and indoor air sampling in manufacturing or laboratory settings • Comparison with Safe Work Australia and NIOSH limits |
• VOCs in groundwater and soil vapour • SVOCs in sediment or landfill leachate • Waste stream profiling for classification |
• VOC emissions from building materials and packaging • Residual solvents in manufacturing • SVOC migration and ageing in consumer products |
Sample Types and Collection Compatibility
We analyse compounds from a variety of air, water, and solid matrices, including:
- Sorbent tubes (e.g. Tenax, Carbograph) for air
- Water, leachate, and aqueous extractions
- Solid matrices: soil, sediment, and waste
- Consumer goods and chemical products
- Packaging films and coated surfaces
Our team can advise on sampling design, holding times, and preservation techniques to maximise data quality.
QA/QC and Method Validation
All methods follow Leeder Analytical’s NATA-accredited quality framework, including:
- Internal standard and surrogate recovery tracking
- Multi-point calibration with matrix spikes
- Batch-specific performance verification
- System suitability and blank checks
- Confirmatory workflows where required
Data outputs are formatted to support scientific interpretation, regulatory submission, or internal R&D documentation.
